This week's guest designer is no stranger to the scrapbooking community. Vicki Boutin designs for 7 Gypsies, Sassafras, and Pink Paislee. She also works with Scrapbook Etc and Scrapbooks and Cards Today magazines. Her art captures the beauty of this craft and can be defined as elegance with added flair! Her pages just make my heart {soar}!
How would you describe your scrapbooking style? What makes your style your own?
I have an eclectic style and I enjoy exploring a lot of different mediums. Sometimes I create simple, linear projects and other times I like to add lots of layers to create artsy projects.
What inspires you to be creative?
I draw inspiration from many places such as ads, fashion, the internet and magazines. Certain colour combos drive me creatively, jewelry inspires me…the passion to create really does come from almost anything that captures my eye.
Who are your favorite scrapbook designers and why?
There are so many! I love Tim Holtz, Jennifer Mcguire, Elizabeth Kartchner, Jennifer Perks to name a few. I am missing so many! I love whimsical and technique based designs and these are a few people who embody that.
What are your favorite color combination to design with right now?
I love aqua, orange, red and brown. Really anything with aqua…that is my current favourite!
What is your creative process?
My motto is plan, sketch and execute. I like to sit down with my products, photos or a kit and look at how it all works together. Then I create sketches. Finally, I create or execute the project. I find joining into a project with a plan saves me a lot of time.
What is your story that you are trying to tell? How can this inspire others?
I believe that you have to have fun exploring the creative process. If it inspires you, give it a try. There really are no rules or critiques. If you think you made a mistake or didn’t do something “right” keep going! Some of the best art is created from Happy Accidents.
How can you inspire others to "create well"?
I guess my best advice is to find your creative “sweet spot” and go with it. If you like to make double page layouts…do it! If you enjoy stamping…do that! Just don’t put yourself in a “box” that prevents you from trying new things. I teach a number of workshops and find that many people will only take classes where the topic is something they are comfortable with. You don’t know if you will like something if you have never tried it. Get out of that box and explore it all!!! Like I said before…the most important thing is “Love what you are doing and have fun!”
