Heidi Swapp - How to Get Out of a Creative Slump
Thursday, June 18, 2015I have been in a creative "slump" for two weeks now. I think all creatives get it. Sometimes the creativity doesn't come easy and it can take days to do one project. I was trying to explain it to my husband the other day. I compared it to his golf game. Some days, you could be hitting the ball perfectly at the driving range and then get on to the course and do terrible - maybe even throw a club or two in frustration. Shoot, some people have thrown their clubs in the water! ha! It is during this time that a lot of people give up. He nodded and agreed - he totally got it.
Unfortunately, it is also during these creative ruts that artists or scrapbookers quit. They decide, they just don't want to do it anymore. I want to encourage you if you are going through a rut! This is normal and a part of any hobby or sport. To get over it is to go through it!
For me, I work off of scrapbook sketches. I just follow each sketch literally until my creativity kind of takes over and I start creating for myself again. For this first layout during this exercise was the Sunday Sketch from Studio Calico.
This first layout usually is the hardest for me and takes a while. To make things easier, I just stick with one paper collection and this case used Heidi Swapp's September Skies which reminded me of the stars on the Sunday Sketch. Then, I just get through it. The second layout gets easier, I promise and then things start flowing easier. It might take 4 or 5 pages, but it is worth it!
The big thing is not to throw your supplies out the window or box it all up and take it to Goodwill. Ha! Wait a little while. Give yourself a break and try it again. You will find joy in it again real soon!
Create Well: Don't give up! You can do it.
